If there is anything that South Africans can take from the latest crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele, then the country is a criminal haven.

The third quarter of the 2022/23 crime figures, which span the months of October 1 and December 31, showed that there were more than 83 murders and 138 rapes daily.
Dr Simon Howell, a criminologist and police expert, talking with Radio Islam International on Monday, claimed that the latest crime statistics show severe problems in our country and that the government is failing to adequately combat crime.
According to statistics, 7,555 murders were committed in the last three months of 2022, more than the number of murders committed in countries where wars are raging. Howell believed that there should be more discussion and debate regarding the crime spiral and how governments plan to combat it.
“Ultimately, there must be some part of the conversation to begin addressing what is clearly a significant issue in South African society, and that is simply murder. There are also a large number of sexual crimes and rape, which are clearly significant issues in society as a whole that must be addressed.”
Howell lamented that Cele failed, indicating a critical need for improved leadership.

“Cele has now had several years to turn things around, but things continue to deteriorate, so I believe it is time for him to be called to order and someone else to take his place.”
