The DA calls on South Africans to make their voices heard against ANC minister Patricia de Lille’s expropriation bill by submitting comments on it. NCOP spokesperson for public works and infrastructure, Tim Brauteseth,  joined Radio Islam International to speak more on the matter.

When asked to explain the details of the bill, the spokesperson says

First of all, its an expropriation bill. Every country has an expropriation bill as it is quite a standard practice, and its normally there for when the state intervenes and expropriates land for public purpose. The previous bills (in South Africa) from 1975 was found to be not constitutionally compliant, so there was an amendment bill brought through which is the one that we are currently discussing. It has, however, brought with it a number of really disturbing aspects.

Tim Brauteseth elaborates that these aspects include the definition of property, as it does not specify the types of property that would fall under the bill. This could mean that businesses, assets, and business buildings could be expropriated. The second aspect is what sort of compensation is due to anybody who’s property is going to be expropriated. The bill effectively says that the government may expropriate land without compensation. Buildings that do get compensation may not be given compensation for the enhancements done on their property.

This bill is past through the national assembly and the national council of provinces . The NCOP are currently in the process of public comment.
