Confusion reigns after the DA announced they would go to court to challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of a national state of disaster to deal with the country’s energy crisis. The party previously called on the President to take this same action to end Eskom’s rolling blackouts. Opposition parties are concerned that the money made available to deal with the crisis will enrich tenderpreneurs and corrupt officials.

For more reaction, Radio Islam International spoke to Outa’s CEO, Wayne Duvenhage, and he expressed the President’s declaration as a highly inappropriate and unnecessary mechanism to deal with the matter.

According to Duvenhage, there are no further details on what this means for ordinary citizens and businesses significantly.

The President announced another Minister for electricity would be placed in the Presidency on Thursday. Duvenhage suggests it is an indication that the President has no trust in ministers like Gwede Mantashe and Pravin Gordhan.

“It also says he doesn’t have a clear plan, causing more confusion and shrouding the accountability covered in a big grey area with three Ministers responsible for energy,” he added.
