President Cyril Ramaphosa is weighing in on the controversial sponsorship of R1 billion to British football club, Tottenham Hotspur – saying he doesn’t believe the deal is justified.
Earlier this week, the Daily Maverik reported that SA Tourism was considering an almost R1 billion sponsorship of Tottenham Hotspur to boost tourism.
The news has been met with widespread controversy as South Africa faces stage 6 loadshedding.
It was alleged that the president would be announcing the deal next week Thursday at the State Of The Nation Address (SONA), however the presidency has squashed these claims.
Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said: “The Presidency has not been briefed on this reported sponsorship, nor is there any plan to announce it during the Sona address. Even though the Presidency has not been briefed, we do not think spending so much money in the manner that is being suggested will be justified.”
