DA leaders, including John Steenhuisen and chief whip Siviwe Gwarabu, this morning briefed the media on its review of this year’s parliamentary events. The party says that the DA caucus in parliament is pushing hard to hold the ANC to account to rebuild the nation and ensure that abuses of executive power on the scale witnessed in the state capture years never occur again.

Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarabu states that the Parliamentary fire that destroyed the National Assembly buildings and the responses to the tragedy set the tone for the year in review.

In a conversation with Radio Islam International, Gwarabu expressed that internal investigations should also have occurred to ensure such an event is not repeated.

“Parliament has not done enough and we cannot simply accept this is way parliament will be until the completion of rebuilding,” she says.

Gwarubu further highlighted some failures of parliament that should never be repeated. She said the Zondo Commission report makes key recommendations to parliament in ensuring the insulation of parliament from power abuses. However, only some of the recommendations of the Zondo Commission report have been implemented in parliament.

She added the matter around the President, and the theft on his Phala Phala farm needs to be investigated.

“The handling of the Phala Phala matter underscores that no lessons have been learnt,” she says.
