Radio Islam International discusses the Brazilian election results and the contestation of the results with Felipe Tirado, a visiting lecturer in Jurisprudence and a PhD Candidate at King’s College London. He has been a researcher at King’s Brazil Institute and the Latin American Transitional Justice Network.

Brazil’s Vice President Hamilton Mourao said on Wednesday that Jair Bolsonaro’s bid to challenge the election he lost last month was not likely to succeed. He argued that more transparency was needed in the country’s electoral process.

Bolsonaro’s right-wing electoral coalition filed the complaint on Tuesday and claimed that votes from some machines should be “invalidated”.

The claim seems unlikely to get far, as Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory has been ratified by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and acknowledged by Brazil’s leading politicians and international allies.
Still, it could fuel a small but committed protest movement that has refused to accept the result.

Bolsonaro, a far-right former army captain, has for years claimed that the country’s electronic voting system is liable to fraud without providing substantiating evidence.

According to Tirado, the party of Bolsonaro attempted to contest the election result, which was barred multiple times by the electoral system.

He said the contest was barred in each instance, and Bolsonaro met with Military leaders and the Minister of Defence.

The same extremism seen throughout the government and election is in play now.

Meanwhile, the view of world leaders concerning Brazil. Tirado said in the first week of the Lula election. Multiple leaders have congratulated showing a lot of international support for Lula.
