The National Shelter Movement of South Africa, in partnership with the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Department of Social Development, is hosting the second annual Shelter Indaba in Johannesburg. The Indaba heard that while there has been some movement in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, much more must be done to stem the GBVF pandemic.

The National Shelter Movement of South Africa is an umbrella body representing approximately 100 GBV shelters throughout the country.

In an interview with Radio Islam International, NSMSA Board member Sharon Kouta said the focus is on gender justice, with the main goal being that shelters are recognised and supported.

“We cannot do the work without partnership,” she added.

The theme of the Indaba conference included accountability, coordination and leadership, which are crucial qualities.

According to Kouta, a National Gender-Based Violence and femicide summit will take place on the 1st and 2nd of November 2022with a similar theme.

Regarding the roles the GBV shelters play in protecting women caught up in gender-based violence and femicide, Kouta said it is a safe place for women who often flee their homes with just the clothes on their backs.

“GBV shelters provides a safe space for victims of abuse and their children,” she says.
