The leading party- the African National Congress (ANC), has rejected the Electoral Amendment Bill in its current form as it makes its way to the National Assembly for consideration.

The ANC says it’s willing to engage with civil society on aspects of the bill that allow independent candidates to run in the elections.

This was revealed on Saturday when the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) hosted its annual lecture with Former Minister and Veteran of the South African Liberation Struggle Valli Moosa as the key speaker.

This year’s lecture ran under the theme: “The People Must Govern.”

Moosa addressed the activist’s struggles to establish the right to vote in the apartheid regime.

“When we decide on a new electoral system we carry the weight of the lives that were sacrificed and the generations to come the ones to whom we have the greatest responsibility,” said Moosa.

He added that the leading parties, ANC, DA and the EFF, have failed to give urgent attention to the bill.

Meanwhile, civil society organization, Defend Our Democracy voiced its support for News24 Journalist Karyn Maughan at the lecture as she faces off with former president Jacob Zuma in court.

Joining the lecture virtually, Maughan expressed her gratitude for the support.
