A German tourist was allegedly shot during an attempted robbery in ka Masoyi near the Numbi gate of the Kruger National Park.
According to the police, four tourists were travelling in a minibus taxi when three armed suspects attempted to hijack them by instructing the driver to open the vehicle’s doors. Police say the driver refused, and one of the suspects opened fire.
The driver managed to drive the vehicle for several meters before hitting a school wall fence.
The driver died on the scene, while the three suspects fled in their vehicle without taking anything from the tourists.
The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) CEO Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa says the incident damaged the local tourism industry.
“We do have a security project that we are putting resources into that particular area, and we want to make sure that tourists are safe, and this incident doesn’t define the tourism industry in South Africa, nor does it define the majority of South Africans in this country, it’s an element of criminality,” says Tshivhengwa.
Police Spokesperson Selvey Mohlala is appealing to anyone with information on the incident for assistance.
