This weekend the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance held its annual ‘Palestine Walk for Freedom’ at Rose Park, Lenasia. The yearly event strives to raise awareness and raise consciousness about the apartheid being perpetrated by the Zionists on the people of Palestine.

The 7.5km walk started on Sunday morning and followed a patrolled route, with watering points and marshals stationed at strategic areas along the way. Food stalls and pop-ups were present for those who attended. The organisers also hosted international and national guests who highlighted the plight of the defenceless Palestinians while raising awareness of other social injustices worldwide.

Nazeem Adam from the PSA talked to Radio Islam International about the event. He stated that they aimed to educate the local community about the injustices happening in Palestine while also showcasing how international solidarity makes an effect by looking at how South Africa was brought out of apartheid partly due to international sanctions. He also added that they wanted to raise hope for those supporting the cause and their colleagues and friends in Palestine.

Recognising the past two years and people who have lost loved ones during the pandemic, the PSA also surprised the residents of Lenasia by dedicating and establishing a memorial garden with thirteen olive trees to help families with closure. This was also dedicated to more than 200 volunteers who were part of the paramedics and patrollers who continued to inspire during this time.
