An eighth-grade student in Malden, Massachusetts, received a uniform violation form for wearing a hijab on her first day at the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School.

An Active member of the At-Taqwa Mosque in Malden, Ahmed Kadmiri, describes the situation as an interesting and bizarre scenario.

During an interview on Radio Islam International, he elaborates that the young girl wore a hijab for the first time at school, probably excited but not expecting to be cited for violating the school’s dress code, leaving her confused.

On the other hand, the school administration is asking for a letter from the students’ faith organization to approve wearing a fundamental right, which is the hijab in this, said Kadmiri.

He says it is unfortunate that this incident happened in Massachusetts.

He says that the school being a charter school means they are state-funded to some degree, not entirely private, and that might have affected the strict dress code policy.

“I do know for sure that those rules or policies that they have in place, technically they are meant to create order, but if the rule is going to create chaos, then it definitely needs to be revised or changed.” Said Kadmiri

Kadmiri says the school, parents, and the learner need time to settle down and understand what the offence might have been through policy and discuss the long-term situation as we advance.

The student has returned to school.
