ESKOM considers disconnecting power to Tshwane

August 23, 2022

In a statement released this afternoon, ESKOM says it is considering disconnecting the power supply to the City of Tshwane to secure outstanding payments.

The drastic measure is due to the City’s breach of the Electricity Supply Agreement with ESKOM. The City was to have made a payment of R1.6 billion due and payable on August 17th 2022, but it has only R68 million to date.

The utility has attempted to work with the City on several occasions to ensure payment, but these efforts have been futile as the City has continued to default. The parastatal says that the situation is untenable due to its precarious financial crisis, and the failure by the City to honour its debt has increased the burden on ESKOM to continue to provide the region with electricity.

The SOE says that it has informed the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs of the risks associated with the overdue payments by the City of Tshwane. It will continue to use different methods to recover the outstanding debt.
