August 13, 2022

Business owners at the Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg are urged to be vigilant following the heist at a jewellery store at the outlet.

The heist was captured on CCTV video footage and widely circulated on social media platforms, including WhatsApp.

The video shows some customers in Shiraz Jewellers who try to distract the salesperson before the robbery occurs.

According to a voice note that accompanied the video, the heist was allegedly committed by a young boy who pretends not to be with the others but forms a part of an entire Egyptian family.

“While we got distracted, you’ll see within the video this boy, and we didn’t even notice, comes in the store. He steals a tray [of jewellery] in like half a minute, and he goes out.”

The individual in the voice note has urged business owners to watch out for the routine utilized by the criminals to rob them.

“Please be on the watch out. They come and sell you guys’ bangles, 21, 22-carat bangles from Dubai. Keeping you busy, ‘can I see this, am I able to see that and that we turned elsewhere this tray was taken.”

He also stated that these individuals have come around the store before.

“This has been planned very well by the Egyptian Family as they have come around, and we have seen them before.”

It’s unclear when the heist transpired or if it had been reported to the police.
