The international company Bain and Co, which was found to have played a role in the capture of the South African Revenue Service, has been banned by the UK government from doing government work for three years.
This was done at the urging of former UK Cabinet minister and anti-apartheid activist Lord Peter Hain. The State Capture Inquiry found that Bain’s South African branch colluded with former president Jacob Zuma and ex-SARS boss Tom Moyane to capture the agency.
In an interview on Radio Islam, whistle-blower Athol Williams said, “My evidence at the Zondo Commission showed that Bain & Co had colluded with former President Zuma. They met 18 times behind closed doors and after hours to plan the repurposing of many of our state-owned enterprises. The first step was to repurpose our democratic intuitions. Looting was the second step.”
All the other companies we talk about in terms of state capture were on the other side of it. They made money. But Bane was the only company that sat with Zuma to plan all of this, and that was Bane.”
Bain whistle-blower Athol Williams was forced to go into hiding in the UK as he feared for his life.
