Tavern Shootings with ministry spokesperson Liranzo Themba

July 14, 2022

Transcript by Yumna Moosa

The police in KwaZulu Natal arrested two people in connection to the tavern shooting in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, that left four people dead and eight injured. This comes after a devastating week in South Africa, where 16 people were shot and killed in a tavern in Soweto.
Ministry spokesperson Lirandzo Themba speaks to Radio Islam about the recent Tavern shootings and their impact on the communities affected, stating, “the police ministry has labelled this one of the bloodiest weekends we’ve seen in recent times”.
Looking at the spared gun cartridges uncovered by the police at the scene, Lirandzo says no confirmed motive has been brought to light. Still, the high calibre of the weapons indicates an intent to kill as many people as possible. She says, looking at the small size of the Tavern, “a robbery was ruled out”.
The police urge anyone who can assist them in coming forward as any information would be valuable.
