A grade 10 student from Lenasia High School passed away in the late hours of the night after fainting in the schools’ bathroom.
According to the school’s principal, Ms Hawa Bibi Munshi, the student asked the educator around 8:15 in the morning to use the bathroom. She was granted permission and went to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, another student went to use the school’s bathroom and found the deceased laying on the floor and alerted the school’s educators.
A stretcher was brought in while a licensed student paramedic assisted in trying to retrieve the girl as the ambulance was en route.
She was then transferred to Lenmed for further care. At the time, the student was fasting.
Munshi says the student was stable but critical in the afternoon. However, around 10 pm, she received a message that the student had passed on. The doctor confirmed that she had suffered a haemorrhage.
“It is traumatic for everyone; we didn’t expect a student to come to school and leave that way,” says Munshi.
A representative of the Department of Education was present at the school this morning to understand what transpired and to offer trauma counselling to the learners.
