Mozambican businessman Faizel Charloos was remanded after allegedly orchestrating the kidnapping of Jahyr Abdula, the son of one of the country’s wealthiest businessmen, Salimo Abdula.
Jahyr was kidnapped on the N17 shortly after arriving in SA and was later rescued by police. Charloos was arrested last week for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping.
Police searched houses in Lenasia, Lawley, Brackenhurst, and Benoni linked to Charloos, and recovered R6 million, 6,000 Mandrax tablets, a high-performance vehicle and luxury clothing.
Charloos appeared briefly in court on Friday, accused of kidnapping, and his co-accused, Hlabati, a minibus taxi owner, was arrested on February 6 and charged with kidnapping on March 6.
Hlabati was granted bail after posting R30,000, but Charloos and his wife Sadyia were remanded until a formal bail application was filed.
Charloos and Hlabati are charged with kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
