The Hennops River became the focus of the recent devastating floods, with people swept away, houses and roads flooded as the river burst its banks after severe rainfalls. The river is one of the few and largest water bodies in Gauteng.
Founder and CEO of Hennops Revival, Tarryn Johnston, says authorities and Gauteng residents cannot wait to wake up until another flood generates damages to the tune of millions of rand, putting populations in distress and under health risks.
Johnston spoke to Radio Islam on the importance of the Hennops River for water supply in the Gauteng region.
“It was devastating this time round, it was worse than the December 2019 floods – there was far more destruction,” said Johnston.
The current issues that the Hennop’s River faces according to Johnston are: waste disposal issues, a lack of education on pollution, influences that are being discharged into the river from industries and malfunctioning of waste water treatments.
She urges communities to volunteer for the river clean up, recycle and be mindful of waste.
“It’s really something taht everybody can contribute towards in their own capacity,” said Johnston.
