Blind man fights to keep his house after a R88k water bill

Achmat Ariefdien, who has been blind since 1982, is unemployed and cares for his aged father. Achmat received a warrant of execution from the City of Cape Town, threatening to take away his house. This comes after Achamt received a water bill for R88 000.

If the City proceeds with the warrant, Achmat, who relies on a disability grant which helps him provide for his wife and children, will lose his home. Over the past 11 years, not a single water bill had been sent to the house.

Many of his neighbours are in the same boat and don’t earn any income at all.

There are local organisations in the area helping to raise funds to help pay the debt, whilst councillors and electoral candidates are trying to stop the warrant of execution that could see the family homeless and in the street.
