A member of the mayoral committee for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Mpho Moerane, has reportedly been endorsed by the ANC regional executive committee in Johannesburg as their mayoral candidate. The Citizen reports that Matongo had been among the longest-serving members of the regional executive committee of the ANC in Johannesburg. He had also been previously appointed as MMC for finance for the City of Johannesburg by the late mayor Geoff Makhubo.
Makhubo’s candidacy for the position of Johannesburg mayor follows the death of Jolidee Matongo recently. Matongo lost his life just two months after having filled the position of Mayor. He died after having spent a full day in Soweto with President Cyril Ramaphosa on a campaign trail. The African National Congress described his death as a “great loss”, saying, “We are forever grateful for his selfless contribution to the freedom of the people of South Africa and the enhancement of service delivery within the City of Johannesburg.”
According to The Citizen, the accelerated service delivery programme had been Matongo’s key focus. Meanwhile, Moerane said he accepted ‘the responsibility in honour of former mayor Matongo’
