In a report earlier this week, the FBI stated that hate crime against blacks and Asian nationalities had risen in the last year, reaching the highest level in a decade.
Data submitted by 15 000 law enforcement agencies across the country showed the rate in 2020 to be at 7759, an increase of 6% from 2019. The stats on hate towards Blacks revealed the numbers rose to 2755 from 1930, and incidents against Asians went from 158 to 274.
US Attorney Merrick Garland said,” The FBI Hate Crime Statistics for 2020 demonstrates the urgent need for a comprehensive response.
More responses came from people saying these hate crimes were spawned when former president Donald Trump blamed China for the coronavirus.”
In May, Garland took new steps to assist the FBI with tracking and investigating these hate crimes. The measure ensured that the Justice Department expedite a review of hate crimes reported to police during the COVID-19 pandemic.
