Afghanistan: US Drone Strike hits Kabul

August 29, 2021

Umm Muhammed Umar

The US has carried out a drone strike against what it says had been a vehicle of suicide bombers linked to ISIS. It says the intended target was Kabul airport.

Al Jazeera reports that according to the US Central Command, “Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material.”

According to Al Jazeera, the US had previously warned of a supposedly “specific, credible threat” near Kabul airport. US President Joe Biden on Saturday claimed that his commanders had received intelligence that attack was “highly likely in the next 24-36 hours”.

Meanwhile, in what seems to have been to be a separate incident, a rocket struck a neighbourhood near the airport, earlier on Sunday. A child was killed in the incident.
