Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo says the new reservoir being built in Lenasia South will provide water for the entire community including informal settlements if they are deemed to be occupying the land legally.

Matongo including his MMC’s were in Lenasia South on Friday to lead what the City of Johannesburg calls an acceleration of service delivery in Lenasia, Lenasia South and Orange Farm within Region G.

The new reservoir which is located in Hospital Hills is expected to be completed in November 2021.

Many residents have been complaining about the intermittent water supply and lower water pressure in the suburb.

Matongo who resides in Lenasia South says the new reservoir will alleviate the pressure on the current demand for water in the area.

“Currently the reservoir that is here that is supplying the area is about six megaliters, in addition to the six, we are building a fifteen megaliter reservoir. Having spoken to the engineers, they are assuring us that with the current capacity and the new capacity, we should be able to supply everybody without problems for the next forty-years.”

Matongo says the issue of illegal land grabs in Lenasia South is ongoing and will be addressed.

“These are organized people, when JMPD leave the site they comeback so the residents keep on phoning me to say ‘JMPD was here, they helped but they left now the construction is still taking place’. I got the report from the chief of police yesterday, even videos to that effect that where some of the brick and mortar structures that have been constructed, those have been put down, so we are dealing with the problem.”

Matongo says while there may be no budget available for the tarring of roads in the area, he has asked the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to make it more “drivable”

Matongo adds he has also requested the Housing Department to complete unbuilt houses in Hospital Hills.
