International human rights lawyer Ziyaad Patel says the invasion of Afghanistan by the US and its allies backed by NATO and the G7 has been illegal under international law.
Patel and fellow human rights advocate Feroz Boda were speaking to Radio Islam about the victory of the Taliban by seizing power from the Western-backed Afghan government and its allies.
The Taliban snatched a military victory that saw the movement capture all cities including Kabul in just 10 days dealing a humiliating blow to the Afghan military and remaining US forces in the country.
Patel says the invasion of Afghanistan was under false pretenses.
“We know the narrative of the war on terror and making America safe or American national interests. This meant for Americans to go across the world into another nation’s state and invade that country and what has transpired from that invasion is gross violations of human rights.”
Patel says the Taliban have made their position clear after taking power and the US must accept defeat.
“The bottom line is that America has lost the war in Afghanistan. Like they’ve done in Iraq, other Middle Eastern states, even in Libya, Northern Africa, when a war is failed or they could not in terms of military prowess achieve the military objectives laid out, they will than start using other mechanisms of sanctions and embargos.”
Boda says former US President George W Bush stated that the “war on terror” was a crusade when the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq.
“He said the American people must be patient, so from the very beginning, this was a war against Islam. If you look at any area in the world where Muslims attempt to implement Shariah law, the US has always got involved either through fighting a proxy war or directly getting involved in invading that particular country.”
Boda says the US’s objective of the war on Afghanistan had a sinister motive.
“The true long-term objective of this war was to extinguish the light of Allah and to prevent the Taliban from establishing Shariah law in the country.”
Patel and Boda concur that the US backed by propagandist media have tried to portray the legitimacy of its invasion of Afghanistan and installing a new Western-backed Afghan government instead of the Afghan people’s right to self-determination.
Last week ex-Guantanamo prisoner and the Director of Outreach at CAGE told Radio Islam the Taliban’s victory was like “divine justice” and that the most powerful nation in the world alongside its most powerful allies had been humbled by a group of people who are among the poorest and the most demonized in the world.
