The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says the families of the slain Marikana miners have still not been compensated after they were gunned down by police in Rustenburg.
Today marks exactly nine years since 34 miners, who had been striking for better pay and acceptable working and living conditions were killed.
Ten other people, including officers and security guards, were also killed in the days leading up to the mass shooting.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Num’s Luphert Chilwane says they are demanding justice and compensation for the families of the Marikana miners.
“We are currently mobilizing our resources to push the government to make sure that those victims are getting what is due to them,”
Chilwane says political parties have politicized the Marikana massacre.
“We have been calling out to all the political parties to refrain from being seen as people who are going there to talk to workers as if they are actually sympathetic to their plight. If they are there to campaign for their political parties, they are there to insult other people, as Num we are totally against it.”
Meanwhile, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has given the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) an ultimatum to prosecute President Cyril Ramaphosa for his role in the Marikana massacre within three months or his party will take the prosecuting body to the high court.
