Political analyst and professor of education science at the University of Rabat Mohamed Chtatou says Morocco’s agreement with Israel could be a means to be an honest broker to resume negotiations between Palestinians and Israeli’s.

Chtatou was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about the foreign ministers of Morocco and Israel signing three accords on Wednesday during the first visit by a top official from the Jewish state since ties were normalised last year

Nasser Bourita and his Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid signed agreements on political consultations, aviation and culture.

Chtatou says Morocco may be a “go between” between Palestinians and Israeli’s as the country had done in the past.

“Recently [Ismail] Haniyeh, the chief of Hamas was visiting Morocco and was received by the Prime Minister and by various other political parties who saluted him and his victory of Hamas in the latest war against Israel.”

Chtatou says there are mixed reactions among Moroccan’s about their country’s relationship with Israel.

“Morocco and Israel have a deep emotional relationship because there is more then one million Moroccan Jews in Israel and they are still very Moroccan in every way and the Jews have very strong ties with Morocco culturally and politically speaking.”

Chtatou says Israel and Morocco striking a deal last year after then US President Donald Trump recognised Morocco’s contested sovereignty in Western Sahara is also one of the main reasons the two countries have decided strengthen ties with each other.
