Democratic Alliance (DA) provincial leader Solly Msimanga says there are concerns surrounding the appointment of Jolidee Matongo as the new mayor of Johannesburg.
Matongo, an African National Congress (ANC) member and the former finance MMC in the metro, was elected as mayor on Tuesday and confirmed his 10-Member, Mayoral Committee (MMCs) shortly after he was sworn-in.
The new list of MMCs, which was a result of consultations with the ongoing Government of Local Unity (GLU) partnership in the city, contains no surprises as majority of members remained unchanged in the portfolios they were assigned by the late Executive Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Msimanga says Matongo has been part of the Joburg caucus for an extensive period of time.
“There’s quite a number of concerns we have. One is that he has been there when Joburg incurred over a billion rand PPE scandal, he was the MMC responsible for finance. We hoping that he will quickly move onto finalising the investigation and people will then be arrested.”
Msimanga says the ANC would not have been able to government without the support from smaller opposition parties.
“The small parties are just actually enjoying the seats, they’re enjoying the positions and whatever perks that come with the position. We’re saying we are not going to be government just for the sake of being in government or for its own power. We want to be in government so that we can then really deliver for the people and this is why we decided that our focus will be on elections so that we can get a greater majority.”
Action SA leader and former Joburg mayor and DA member Herman Mashaba said Matongo had nothing to offer the metro and that he propped and applauded corruption.
