Ramaphosa at State Capture Inquiry: “ANC Deployment Committee Recommends, Doesn’t Appoint Government Officials”

August 11, 2021

Faizel Patel – 11/08/2021

President Cyril Ramaphosa insists that the African National Congress (ANC) deployment committee can only recommend government officials but is not an appointing structure.

Ramaphosa returned to the state capture commission of inquiry on Wednesday morning.

In his appearance, Ramaphosa has responded mainly to questions from his time as both deputy president and now president of the country.

Zondo asked Ramaphosa, if the ANC wanted to influence the appointment of certain people within government and whether it should not do that transparently.

“Chairperson I think we must accept that we live in a world where lobbying takes place where people who for one reason or other prefer certain persons or candidates t be placed in certain positions.  That happens all over the world all the time. There will people and groups of people who will articulate preferences. It should not be seen as something that is evil or dastardly wrong.”

Ramaphosa says while it “appeals” to him that it the deployment of officials should happen transparently and that it is something he will take up in discussion and debate with the ANC, Zondo says where it is transparent, it can be debated and scrutinised.
