Jolidee Matongo Appointed as New Mayor of Johannesburg

City of Johannesburg Finance MMC Jolidee Matongo has been appointed as Johannesburg’s new mayor

Speaker of the Johannesburg council Nonceba Molwele called a special council meeting on Tuesday to elect the new mayor

The seat was left without a mayor after Geoff Makhubo passed away in July due to COVID-19-related complications.

Matongo was elected unopposed after two hundred and fifty-six councillors participated in the special sitting from different locations.

Matongo says he is honoured to be appointed as Mayor for the City of Johannesburg.

“I am thankful for the honour and privilege to serve the people as Mayor for the next coming months”

Matongo has urged council to put political differences aside with the aim to put the needs and daily experiences of Joburg residents first.
