Political analyst Xolani Dube from the Xubera Institute for Research and Development says a reshuffling of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet would not make difference to the country if the officials come from within the ranks of the African National Congress (ANC).
While South Africans have put pressure on Ramaphosa to shake up his government and make major changes, the president has given some indication that a cabinet reshuffle is underway.
It is believed that a cabinet shakeup is needed as government came in for severe criticism for the way it handled the unprecedented violence in Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng last month.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Dube says South Africa has seen cabinet reshuffles for the past twenty-seven years and questions the need for a shakeup if it will not make a difference.
“To reshuffle is to get people who are competent, people who are moral and ethically bind leaders. But, we have seen either of those from the people who ascend into these highest positions. So whether you reshuffle or you don’t reshuffle, I don’t think that there is any difference as long as people who are reshuffled and those who are being called upon come from the same pots of the ANC.”
Dube says it is the “incompetence of Ramaphosa” to reshuffle the cabinet.
“As I have been saying several times, we don’t have a leader in this country, we are leaderless. For him to say we will be reshuffling because who are supposed to be appointed because in the ANC there is nothing at all. There’s not even a single leadership that can fill any of these vacancies.”
Dube says South Africans should not waste their time pondering on the cabinet reshuffle, but rather focus their attention on what kind of political party, leadership or electoral system that will give citizens hope for a better country.
