[LISTEN] Palestine Report: Israel Supreme Court to Rule on Sheikh Jarrah Evictions; African Countries Oppose Israel Observer Status & Ismail Haniyeh Re-Elected as Hamas Leader

August 02, 2021

Faizel Patel – 02/08/2021

As Israel’s Supreme Court prepares to hand down judgment in a high-profile Sheikh Jarrah case, the Palestine Information Network (PIN) says residents of the neighbourhood have described the last three months as a “hellish period” for them.

Four Palestinian families in occupied East Jerusalem are facing imminent expulsion if the court rules against them to make way for Jewish settlers.

The ruling, which was initially expected in May, was postponed when the attorney general requested more time to study the case and following daily protests and sit-ins that were violently dispersed by Israeli forces using tear gas, sound bombs, and rubber bullets.

Pin’s Hafez Ebrahim Moosa says Israel has instituted new restrictive measures in Sheikh Jarrah.

“The Israeli’s have set up new checkpoints at the entrance to the street where the eviction orders might fall. So a totally miserable period where just the process of entering and exiting has become a nightmare for the residents.”

Hafez Moosa says the Supreme Court must hear the appeal that the families are putting forward against the eviction notices.

“Already we’ve got indication that the Israeli government has been trying to delay this entire process fearing the sensitivity of it, fearing that new violence could be provoked.”

Hafez Moosa also spoke about fourteen African countries opposing Israel’s African Union observer status and Ismail Haniyeh re-elected as leader of the Hamas.
