President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa should be heading towards herd immunity soon.

The President together with Gauteng premier David Makhura and acting health minister Mamloko Kubayi Ngubane visited a public health facility in Tembisa and a private-public partnership centre in Midrand and engaged with both staffers and those who pitched for their jabs.

Speaking to journalists in Tembisa, Ramaphosa said that the country’s vaccination programme had gained steam through the cooperation between government and the private sector.

Ramaphosa also lauded the innovation introduced in the administering of the COVID-19 inoculations, telling journalists that government would soon introduce drive-through sites.

“We are making a great deal of progress. The numbers of vaccinations are ticking up. The minister was telling me one of the innovations is drive through vaccinations where people just come, stay in their cars and they are vaccinated, the screening happens and then they move on.”

Ramaphosa spoke about the goodness of South Africa positioning itself to be the manufacturing Hub of the COVID-19 Vaccine.

“We will in time be able to have the drug substance manufactured here and it will be filled and finished here and in other centers on our continent as well.”

Ramaphosa says while COVID-19 has had a devastating impact, South Africa and entire continent have enabled innovative and creative ways of addressing the Coronavirus and future pandemics a lot more effectively and more efficiently.
