After more than five months of the position being vacant, the eThekwini Municipality will finally elect a deputy mayor
Former Durban councillor, Diana Hoorzuk, was formally nominated to the position for the City during an executive council meeting (Exco) on Tuesday. The ANC, last month, appointed Hoorzuk as a member of Exco.
Hoorzuk will replace her predecessor Belinda Scott, who abruptly resigned to work in the private sector in February. As part of her new position, Hoorzuk is also the finance, security, and emergency services committee chairperson.
Hoorzuk has enjoyed a long political career, mainly in Durban. In 2000, before famously defecting to join the ANC, Hoorzuk, was a National People’s Party councillor in the Durban inner west council.
She served as an ANC eThekwini councillor until 2016. During that time, Hoorzuk was also a council member at Mangosuthu University for 15 years and served on the director’s board of the Aids Health Foundation.
Hoorzuk, in 2018, was appointed to the 12-member Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal nature conservation board. That board has since been suspended pending investigations of maladministration.
She will undergo a formal election on Thursday before eThekwini Municipality’s full council.
