Gauteng Education Dept Set to Resume Academic Year on Monday after Winter Break

July 23, 2021

Faizel Patel – 23/07/2021

The Gauteng Education Department says it set to resume the academic year following the closure of schools following the winter break.

Millions of learners will return to school for the Third Term on Monday.

Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi is expected to visit a number of schools in Gauteng to check the schools’ readiness for the third term.

Lesufi’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says they are ready to receive the learners.

Mabona says the department has also recruited thousands of COVID-19 screeners to help with the management of the virus in schools, including taking temperatures, ensuring hands are regularly sanitized while masks are worn at all times.

“Both primary and secondary schools will be allowed to continue with their adaptable timetables to teach on the 26th of July. However, the primary schools are expected to bring back all children on the 2nd of August 2021.”

Mabona has called on communities to safeguard schools and ensure they are not vandalised when the academic year resumes.

“We have over eleven schools that were vandalised while schools were closed. However we need to emphasise that this is not related to the recent unrest. So we want to encourage members of the public to continue to report  any vandalism of our schools.”

Mabona says they will continue to support the Grade 12 learners ahead of exams, adding that walk-in centres will be open over the weekends to assist students.
