IEC to Head to Court to Have Local Government Elections Postponed to 2022

July 23, 2021

Faizel Patel – 23/07/2021

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has endorsed the findings of the panel looking into the October municipal elections which found that the elections should be postponed.

The IEC received the final report of the Inquiry into Ensuring Free and Fair Elections during COVID-19 from former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke earlier this week

Moseneke heard submissions from political parties and various organisations on whether the elections should go ahead or not amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

There has been major concerns that with the lockdown that the elections will not be free and fair and the panel recommended that the elections be held before the end of February 2022.

IEC Chairperson Glen Mashini says the IEC has considered the Moseneke report which considered projections for the virus.

Mashinini says the IEC will be approaching a competent court to seek the postponement of the elections.

Mashinini says a new date for voter registration will be announced in due course.
