Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula contradicted President Cyril Ramaphosa when she said there was no planned insurrection of the violent riots, looting and unrest in the country.
Ntshaveni was briefing the media on Monday on government interventions to address various issues emanating from the recent violent protests that took place in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal last week.
Several people were killed during stampedes after criminals looted shopping centres and malls for food, clothing and electronics, ransacking factories and torching warehouses.
Ntshaveni says the position of government is that as articulated by Ramaphosa of an attempt at insurrection in the country after being informed by military commanders and other law enforcement agencies during a discussion at the National Security Council chaired by the president.
“To that effect, any contrary view, we do not know where it comes from. It is not supported by any facts by our law enforcement agencies including the military.”
Ntshavheni says the total recorded deaths to date as a result of the violence is 250.
“In terms of arrests, there has been 6 arrests of the key instigators and out of those arrested, 3 have already appeared but they were remanded in police custody for bail hearings.”
Ntshavheni says in terms of assistance to those who lost their livelihoods, the TERS benefit is immediately available to affected employees who are members of UIF or whose employers were members of the UIF.
