Government Preparing to Vaccinate South Africans Between the Ages of 35-49

July 09, 2021

Faizel Patel – 09/07/2021

COVID-19 vaccine registration for South Africans between the ages of 35-49 will open on 15 July.

The Health Department has set a target to start vaccinating this age group from 1 August.

Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane made the announcement during a media briefing on Friday.

Kubayi-Ngubane says the department has been receiving a number of requests for this age group to be vaccinated.

“We do believe that the age gap or the age process continues to be the best and less logistics, less administrative process that could assist us to reach more South Africans.”

Meanwhile, more than four million people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 jab with the number of daily vaccinations increasing.

Kubayi-Ngubane says the department is expecting the number of vaccinations to surpass 250 000 per day by the end of next week.

“While this is one of the milestone and though we note that, many people are saying it’s not yet enough because we comparing with percentage of the population, it’s still a bit of a challenge. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on vaccine together with the president still expects us to achieve more and they have raised their concerns with us and giving us feedback on what needs to be done to improve and ramp up the vaccine programme.”

Kubayi-Ngubane says that the department wants to make sure that the vaccines reach all South Africans as quickly as possible.
