Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo has passed away.
Makhubo was admitted to hospital recently with COVID-19 complications.
The City of Johannesburg’s acting Mayor and MMC for Health Eunice Mgcina says Makhubo passed away on Friday morning.
“We had hoped that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods.”
Mgcina says Makhubo’s family has requested to be afforded privacy and space as they process the loss of one of their own.
“Mourners are discouraged from gathering at the home of the Executive Mayor.”
Makhubo was appointed Joburg mayor in December 2019.
