Haiti citizen Peterson Pierre says the political climate in Haiti has been deteriorating for the past three years.

Pierre was speaking to Radio Islam following the assassination of Haiti President Jovonel Moïse.

Moise was gunned down on Tuesday by unknown Spanish-speaking assailants.

Pierre says there has been uneasiness in the country over the past few days with a number of kidnappings and murders.

“Last weekend in the city they found fifteen dead bodies, people assassinated including a journalist as well. Two days ago, they murdered a nurse while she was on duty, she was in an ambulance.”

Pierre says the atmosphere in Haiti is very tense.

“There’s a high level of uncertainty because we don’t know if this will lead to a transition to a peaceful period or we don’t know the level of insecurity will rise and there’s a level of hopelessness at the same time.”

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in televised remarks after chairing a cabinet meeting that the government had declared a state of emergency amid confusion over who would take over the reins of the country.
