Lenasia doctor Fatima Lambat says the first of its kind COVID-19 Emergency/Disaster Facility at the Nurul Islam Hall serves the entire community irrespective of race, creed or colour.

NGO Gift of the Givers set up the facility at the Nurul Islam Hall to reduce the pressure on the hospital system as the country battles the third wave of the Coronavirus and Delta variant.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Lambat says the COVID-19 Emergency/Disaster Facility is not a walk-in facility.

“We have to protect the surrounds. There is a hotline on the poster and one of the doctors will be on call for the day and will be able to sit through whether we are able to accommodate the patient in terms of if they need the treatment we are giving there.”

Lambat says the treatment centre is an intermediary facility which Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman indicated he wants across the country to alleviate the pressure on the healthcare system.

“The treatment that we offer there will be medication that we need to give them whether its intravenous. We won’t be able to accommodate patients who need ventilators, but we’ll be able to accommodate patients who require a higher flow of oxygen compared to a house.”

Lambat says while there is no charge for the use of the facility to the patient, there will be some costs for bloods and physiotherapy.

She says the facility is open to everyone in the community.

‘This is the spirit of Ubuntu. You must remember this is a multicultural, this is multi-national, multi-racial and there’s going to be zero discrimination in the spirit of Ubuntu. I must say Jazak’allah to Nurul Islam as well because I promise without them also this would not have happened.”

She says strict COVID-19 precautions have been put in place to ensure that there is no risk of spread to the school, masjid or surrounding neighbourhood.

Lambat says the facility is expected to be fully operational by Wednesday Insha’Allah.
