South African maths and science teacher Khangelani Sibiya says old methods and perceptions have created a stigma that mathematics is a difficult to conquer leaving many learners with a fear of the subject.
Sibiya who hails from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal beat contenders from 79 countries to win the coveted teacher of the year award in 2019.
The award aims to recognise innovation and creativity in teaching and learning.
Sibiya says he has a different approach to maths.
“I create a conducive environment. So when I am in class I make it a point that all learners are free to ask any question and allow them to ask any question in anyway if they don’t understand. I make sure that I relate my teaching to real life.”
Sibiya says there has been a new outlook to the way learners are approaching maths.
“The first thing is mentality, the change of the stigma to say now they can see that wow I can obviously pass maths. After using this method they start to enjoy mathematics, to see that mathematics it not difficult.”
Sibiya says he has thought many learners maths who are now at university, urging teachers to make teaching the subject fun.
