Renowned author of Indian Delights Dr Zuleikha Mayat says it has taken her 24-years to write her new book “The Odyssey of Crossing Oceans.”
Mayat was speaking to Radio Islam ahead of the launch of the book on Saturday.
Mayat is also a well-known cultural and social activist and philanthropist.
Mayat says The Odyssey of Crossing Oceans was inspired by one of her other publications, “The Muslims of Gujarat.”
“When I had written Muslims of Gujarat, I saw people were very interested in it, even the young people. So I thought now let me do something better so that they get motivated. I thought it was essential for our youth to know where they came from, where they’re going to and they must let the whole world know how they had confronted the challenges of life.”
Mayat says The Odyssey of Crossing Oceans recounts how Arab traders crossed many oceans including the Red Sea to the West Coast of Africa, to India, Sri-Lanka and South Africa.
“The book recalls how life was lived in all those countries and in all those places as well as in South Africa. Now whilst the majority of some Indians have stayed in South Africa, a few have now made another crossing to western lands.”
The launch of The Odyssey of Crossing Oceans will be lived streamed via Zoom.
