A fire has gutted the Maraisburg Masjid causing substantial damage to the place of worship.
It is understood the fire started on Saturday night but has since been contained.
Emergency response organisation Vision Tactical says members of its team rushed to the scene to assist Johannesburg Emergency Services and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to battle the blaze.
In a statement, the Maraisburg Masjid Committee says a proper safety assessment needs to be conducted once the situation is stabilised.
“The masjid will therefore be closed until further notice. We ask Allah to reward all those that have responded to protect the masjid.”
No injuries have been reported.
