Eskom has announced that it will implement stage four load shedding from 2pm on Wednesday until 10pm.
The power utility says it is ramping up the rolling blackouts due to additional breakdowns of a unit at Medupi and two units at Duvha Power Station, together with the high winter demand.
The stage four power cuts comes after the power utility implemented stage two power cuts on Wednesday morning citing delays in returning generation units to service at Kusile, Tutuka, Duvha, Kendal and Koeberg power stations.
Eskom’s Sikonathi Mathshantsha has urged the public to reduce their electricity usage.
“This is in order to ration the remaining emergency generation reserves, which have been depleted. These emergency reserves are required to respond to further emergencies in order to maintain the stability of the national grid. Thereafter Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented as previously communicated.”
Eskom has apologised for the interruptions in electricity supply.
