The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says the decision taken by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to institute charges against the notorious Gupta family is a step in the right direction.

The  NPA laid charges against Rajesh and Atul Gupta, their wives including several of their business associates.

Last week, the NPA also asked Interpol to issue Red Notice International Arrest Warrants for the Guptas while all the assets of the family and their associate, Iqbal Sharma were frozen by a South African Court.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the  Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Balton says the country has been waiting for action to be taken against the Gupta’s.

“Certainly from all of the news reports , it looks as if they have done all of the necessary paperwork to have taken the kinds of steps that they have. I think this is the most significant development since the Zondo Commission started by the NPA.”

Meanwhile, Balton says similar action should be taken against Health Minister Zweli Mkhize for his department’s role in the Digital Vibes scandal.

“I think there is a general view in the foundation that it would’ve been more advisable for the minister to step down and certainly I think that that’s the broad public position as well, on this particular case , we think action is required, the Digital Vibes thing.” (sic).

Balton says while the Gupta family designed their entire corrupt framework around former President Jacob Zuma, other officials are using the same template to perpetrate corrupt activities which ultimately affects the poor in the country.
