A fire at a juvenile detention center in Cairo, Egypt, has resulted in the death of six teenage girls. Nineteen others were injured.
Al Arabiya reports that the building, which houses around 200 girls aged between 14 and 17, caught on fire on Thursday evening.
The fire, reportedly was brought under control by civil defense workers brought the blaze, which remained confined to one wing of the detention centre, under control.
The remains of those who perished were handed over to their families, and the head of the juvenile detention center detained.
According to Al Arabiya fires are a common peril in Egypt, where many buildings are decrepit and run down. Twenty people are reported to have died in a fire at a textile factory in Cairo in March, while seven patients were killed in a blaze at a hospital, also near Cairo, in December 2020.
