As the annual Hajj draws close, Indonesia has announced that its pilgrims will not participate in Hajj 1441/2021 in Saudi Arabia because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 220,000 people from the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country were set to take part in this year’s Hajj.
Indonesia’s government, which is grappling with the pandemic and the vaccination of its 276 million population, says it is prioritizing the safety of pilgrims in the wake of the spread of new COVID-19 variants in various countries
Indonesia’s religious affairs minister Fachrul Razi says the government decided to cancel the Hajj 2020 as the Saudi Arabian authorities failed to provide certainty.”
“This was a very bitter and difficult decision. But we have a responsibility to protect our pilgrims and Hajj workers.”
Because Indonesia is the largest Muslim majority country pilgrims have have to wait up to 20 years to perform Hajj.
