NGO Gift of the Givers says hunger is enveloping the world at a rapid rate and there is not a country where hunger does not affect anyone.
Gift of the Givers Dr Imtiaz Sooliman was speaking to Radio Islam on Friday as the world acknowledged “World Hunger Day 2021” under the theme “Everyone Deserves to Eat.”
It has been estimated that almost eight hundred million people in the world do not have enough food to eat.
The World Hunger Day project was started in 2011 celebrating sustainable solutions for hunger and poverty.
Dr. Sooliman says the pangs of hunger is devastating, especially in the Eastern Cape.
“Wherever you go, you just see hunger.”
Dr. Sooliman says besides providing food parcels to the hungry, which started about three days ago, Gift of the Givers, are also providing communities with materials to grow and maintain a food garden.
“Since last year we’ve been setting up gardens in various areas and monitoring it trying to help people for self-sustainability. Because at the end of the day the food parcels are not going to last forever, the grants are not going to last forever and everybody can grow something, they have something to eat and a small patch can give a very good yield.”
Dr. Sooliman says government has tried to implement the self-sustainability initiative, but there must be “buy-in” from communities adding that many people think that farming is “not attractive” and keen to grow their own crops.
