It’s emerged that Gauteng’s controversial e-Toll system will be scrapped.

Gauteng Transport MEC announced on SAFM radio on Thursday morning that a decision had been taken to scrap the Gauteng e-Toll system.

In a tweet, the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) says while it would love for this to be true, after its intense fight to get e-Tolls scrapped.

“We must point out that we are waiting for Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula or David Makhura or the Presidency to issue a statement. We are careful to celebrate before it’s official.”

The Gauteng government including the African National Congress (ANC) have been vocal about wanting national government to scrap the system in its current form.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) launched the e-Tolling project in 2013 as part of the plan to improve the road network in Gauteng.

However, it has been met with resistance from motorists who have refused to pay the e-Toll bills.
