The police have warned motorists in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West to be vigilant when driving because of an increase in tyre-spiking cases in these provinces.
Police say in the most cases, the criminals were armed and usually operated in the late evening or early hours of the morning.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane says criminals are using different modus operandi to hijack motorists.
“They are not just using spikes on our public roads. Sometimes they go overhead bridges throwing hard objects such as rocks from an overhead bridge so that it hits your windscreen. It distracts the driver, the moment when you lose control, that’s when they pounce on you.”
Maremane has appealed to motorists to exercise caution when driving at night.
“If they can travel during the day we would really appreciate it. At the same time what we are encouraging our road users to is when there are spikes and if their vehicle is driveable, they must not stop but rather driver slowly to nearest garages where they can get some help or where they can contact us as traffic police.”
Maremane says motorists must be aware their surrounding and stick to the speed limit so they can avoid dangers on the road they are travelling on.
